Memorial marker dedicated for Wayne "Cotton" Morgan

Officers, friends and family dedicated a memorial marker honoring Wayne Cotton Morgan outside the Morgan County Jail Wednesday morning.

Employees of that jail pitched in to buy a memorial marker honoring his service.

Morgan worked for the Department of Correction for 28 years and was two years away from retirement when he was shot and killed nearly seven years ago.

"I think it is important to remember his service, his sacrifice to the state. I think it is important to remember his legacy and not just focus on what happened down at Kingston courthouse, but the man he was, what an honorable man he was, what a good man he was," said Morgan's friend, correctional counselor Freddie Seavers.

Officer Morgan was shot and killed while escorting an inmate from the Roane County Courthouse during a prisoner escape in August 2005.
