Time running out to help build a Field of Dreams for some deserving kids

We've got just a few days left to make a Field of Dreams a reality in Scott County.

October 27 is Make a Difference Day for WBIR and our parent company, Gannett.  On that day, employees are asked to get out and make an impact in a local community.  We've picked the Boys and Girls Club of the Cumberland Plateau in Oneida.

We want to bring lots of fun and smiles to those deserving kids at the club, by transforming a rocky piece of land into a multi-purpose sports field.

And as 10News anchor Russell Biven found out on his visit to Scott County on Monday, this community needs help now more than ever.

As the changing leaves on the Cumberland Plateau splatter a painting of beauty across this East Tennessee canvas, the town is painted with signs of heartache and blotted with blight.

Once lively businesses make a graveyard of dead and vacant buildings, and the unemployment rate is still the highest in all of Tennessee.

"That's the biggest problem, the lack of jobs," said one resident.

Bottom line, our neighbors are hurting, and it's time to do what we do best-- volunteer.

The Boys and Girls Club of the Cumberland Plateau in Oneida is a pretty good place to start.  It serves hundreds of children every day.

"Most of the kids that we serve are at-risk youth because we are in a disadvantaged area," says Hank Hill, the club's director.
With your help, we can not only turn this empty lot into a multi- sport field, but also support the club with other needs, allowing parents and foster parents, some of who are still out of work, take comfort in knowing their children are taken care of.

And those kids are taking notice of this project.  Russell asked one student if he was excited about it.  His answer?  "Yeah. Surprised they would do all this for us."

All of us helping people struggling today, by empowering the leaders of tomorrow.

"If i had money I would give to something like this, too," said one girl.

That's a picture worth painting.  We hope you join us.

So how can you help??

You can make donations on the Field of Dreams page.   The club could also use donations of athletic gear, toys, books, games, educational materials, furniture or technology.
