Game of the Week: Catholic at West

The USA Today High School Sports Game of the Week features a District 4-AAA match-up between West and Catholic.

The Rebels (5-2, 2-2) were the favorite to grab the district runner-up spot until they were knocked off last week by Lenoir City. After the loss, West dropped from No. 2 in the AP 5A rankings down to the No. 5 spot. They sit in fourth place in the district behind Lenoir City, Bearden and Maryville.

Homeless Student Report shows startling numbers

School systems across the state are seeing more students come through their doors without basic necessities, according to new report from the Tennessee Comptroller's Office of Research and Education Accountability.

The Homeless Students in Tennessee Public Schools report shows startling numbers of students classified as homeless.

In our viewing area, two school systems stood out as having especially high numbers of homeless students.

Cumberland County reported 696 homeless students in the 2010- 2011 school year. Hamblen County reported 649.

Friday morning students at a Campbell County elementary school took part in a deadly explosion and a hostage situation.

Neither situation was real.  The school system teamed up with emergency responders from throughout Campbell County to hold mock disaster drills at Elk Valley Elementary.

"We went to the school earlier this week and briefed them [the students] and talked with them about what we're doing," said Campbell County Sheriff Robbie
Goins.  "They are excited about it, too.  We've made them feel like they are a part of it, which they are."

We're learning more about a Morgan County principal suspended for excessively spanking a student with a paddle.

The Morgan County Sheriff's Office says Penny Elizabeth Boyd turned herself in to authorities Monday to answer the charge of child abuse. She was booked into the jail and posted her $5,000 bond and is out of custody.

She is set to appear in general sessions court in Morgan County on December 20.

A Morgan County principal who was suspended for excessively spanking a student with a paddle has now been charged with child abuse and neglect following a Morgan County Sheriff's Office investigation. She is out on bond.

Monday, she had started back at work at a new school. Her placement sparked outrage and protests from some parents.

Dr. Elizabeth Boyd was the principal at Sunbright Elementary School before a parent filed a complaint about her using severe corporal punishment against her son.

Right up until the second half Saturday night, the incredible momentum that energized Knoxville for the past week seemed like it might be enough to carry the Tennessee Volunteers to a victory against the Florida Gators for the first time in eight meetings.

The Vols were up 14-10 in front of a sell-out crowd of more than 102,000.

 

But then the 2nd half happened to a team that's had some memorable 2nd half meltdowns in the past few years.

Then the Gators scored 27 points.
