Scott Co. veterans honored at renovated War Memorial Building | News
(WBIR-ONEIDA) All across East Tennessee, and the rest of the country, people paused to thank the men and women who have served our country.
In Oneida, the community celebrated Veterans Day by showing off the newly renovated War Memorial Building.
In 2010, the local American Legion and Disabled Veterans groups decided it was time to rehab the old building
where they had their meetings. It was once a community gathering place, with dances and parties, but had fallen into disrepair over the years.
They've spent several years raising thousands of dollars to restore the historic building to its former glory, by holding car shows, dinners, and music.
Slowly, the money came in, all donated by the community.
Now, they've got a huge, beautiful stage, newly installed carpet, and a brand new kitchen.
While the building still needs a few final touches, veterans say they are happy to just finally have a place to come together again.
"It's good to get veterans and their families together, talk about experiences and everything," said Oneida veteran Avery Lee Honeycutt. "It's very therapeutic. I encourage any veteran in the community to get involved in it."
