The Scott County hospital marked a major milestone this week.

The hospital reopened one year ago after being closed for 19 months.

That closure was a scary time for the community.

"It was devastating because we had people who has cancer, people who have heart attacks, people like me with breathing problems, children getting hurt. We all had to go out of town. The closest hospital was 45 minutes away. People could have died in that length of time," said patient Essie McCoy.

Patients say having the hospital back has had a huge impact on their treatment and their lives.

Pioneer Health Services took over the hospital. Reopening it helped patients and put a lot of people back to work, .like nurse Ashley Burress.

"It's been great. trying to get things up and going, a little crazy at first. Everybody trying to get back into the swing of everything but it's great. I love it. I love my job," said Burress.

Burress worked at the hospital for about four years before it closed.

She was rehired back in April.
