Help us build a Field of Dreams for some deserving kids

October 27 is Make a Difference day for WBIR, and our parent company, Gannett. It's a day we are supposed to get out and make an impact in our community, and with your help, we want to create a Field of Dreams for the children of one of East Tennessee's poorest counties.

For many kids growing up in Scott County, the numbers are stacked against them.  85% of children recieve free or reduced lunch. Half of them, 43%, are on food stamps. That's on top of having the highest unemployment rate in the state, 17.5%.

Mother and daughters open Oliver Spings gift shop

An Oliver Springs family wanted a place close by where they could shop for gifts so they opened their own store.

"It's just something we've always loved and always been interested in so it's just a dream come true for us," Sheila Johnson said.

Depending on who you ask, it took either 5 years or 7 years for that dream to become an actual store in Oliver Springs.

Hundreds gathered at the Boys and Girls Club in Oneida to recognize a few special people and hear Governor Haslam speak. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Cumberland Plateau in Scott County held its annual hall of fame induction on Thursday.

Governor Haslam was on hand to speak about the importance of mentoring our youth. The program also included dinner. Tickets were $50, and all the proceeds will benefit the club.
